Exiles and Witch Trials

June 26 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Anne Hutchinson on trial

Today, political and social debates rage across American society.

How do they compare to the political discourse of the early Colonial settlers of Rhode Island?

Join park Ranger Andrew Schnetzer as we discuss some parallels between today’s discourse and the lives of Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, and others. “Your blood has been on your own head,” wrote John Cotton to the banished Roger Williams in 1636. For the next decade, they traded barbed letters. Some were printed in London, to an awestruck English public. Fierce debates raged over the law, power, and the nature of truth. Join a “lievelie” discussion about our past and future.

Andy Schnetzer is a National Park Service ranger specializing in education and community engagement. The goals of his work at Roger Williams National Memorial are to promote understanding, foster kindness, and encourage curiosity.
