Thursday, February 1 at 6:30p.m. at Wanskuck Library, with Sylvia Ann Soares for Defiance! In Our Defense.

Sylvia Ann Soares portrays a compelling new radical Nancy Elizabeth Prophet (1890-1960), African American Narragansett-Pequot, first known graduate of color from RI School of Design (1918). Including Prophet’s life experience, her friendship with W.E.B. Du Bois and her teaching at Spelman, we newly witness an elder Prophet’s likely responses to racist incidents in the US and in Rhode Island.

About the Storyteller

Soares has enacted Nancy Elizabeth Prophet in versions of Defiance! since 2013. Her other characters include ‘Silvy Tory’ an enslaved woman of RI. Sylvia Ann is a veteran of Rites and Reason Theatre. Her work is fueled with the sanctity of justice, humanity and nature.

About Funda Fest

FUNDA means to “to learn” in Zulu (one of the African languages spoken in South Africa). RIBS chose this name for the festival because storytelling is the most ancient way peoples of African descent (and other cultures as well) passed on history, traditions, and cultural knowledge. Not only that, it looks like FUN!

Funda Fest 26 runs January 19 – February 3, 2024, and features over 25 performers. Performances take place all around Rhode Island, including the opening party in Providence, a Family Fun Day in Newport and Westerly the ever-popular Liars’ Contest in East Providence, and a concluding Black History Live + event at Southside Cultural Center of RI. Most in-person events will also be live streamed. For the full schedule of events, as well as information about tickets and passes, visit fundafest.org.
