The Monarch is one of the most recognized butterflies in the Lepidoptera species. It is also one of the most endangered. If you are interested in learning what this iconic butterfly needs to survive and thrive, this presentation is for you. If you just want to learn about the life cycle (metamorphosis) and see some up close, personal photos of monarchs, this presentation is for you too! This unique butterfly holds this “Monarch Mama’s” attention (some would say obsession) from late June to October as she collects monarch eggs to raise into butterflies. If nature cooperates there will be monarch caterpillars and butterflies to view.
Sandra Cook is a URI Master Gardener-class of 2008. Her garden is certified as a National Wildlife Backyard Habitat, Monarch Waystation and was featured in R.I. Monthly Magazine. She has joined with Homegrown National Park whose goal is to encourage growing native habitats in our own backyards thereby supporting species that include the monarch butterfly.
