Novel Writing Class

Join us for a 5-week novel writing class in November for adult learners taught by Victoria Dalpe in person at Mount Pleasant Library!

About this event

As another November comes around, many writers both seasoned and beginner, will embark on NaNorimo, aka National Novel Writing Month. The goal of NaNorimo is to write an entire novel (approx. minimum length 60k words) in one month. Herculean? You bet, but for the right writer, the work they do on their novel in November, whether they complete the challenge or not, can be the jumpstart they need. This 5 week workshop at the Mt. Pleasant Library invites aspiring and seasoned novelists to get the support of a workshop group while writing their manuscripts. Classes will have discussions on aspects of novel writing, from outlining, plotting, process, character development, dialogue, tone, and edits. There will be time within the class for independent work and crits, either whole class or in smaller groupings. Attention will be paid to what happens after the book is written, covering outlining, beta readers, and looking for where to send it! Students in the class will be encouraged to write a cover letter and pitch document ‘selling’ their novel and do homework researching different publishers and options for a completed novel. By the end of the 5 week workshop, students should leave the class with a firmer grasp on their novels, themselves as writers, and the path their novel will take once it is complete.
