Funda Reschedule

Thursday, March 14 at 4:00p.m. at Wanskuck Library, with Sylvia Ann Soares for Defiance! In Our Defense.

Sylvia Ann Soares, 82, portrays a compelling new elder Nancy Elizabeth Prophet (1890-1960,) African American Narragansett-Pequot, first known graduate of color from RI School of Design (1918.) Including Prophet’s struggles as an artist in Paris, her friendship with W.E.B. Du Bois, her teaching at Spelman and more, we also witness a sophisticated elder Prophet’s likely thoughts on social situations in Rhode Island and in the US.

About Funda Fest

FUNDA means to “to learn” in Zulu (one of the African languages spoken in South Africa). RIBS chose this name for the festival because storytelling is the most ancient way peoples of African descent (and other cultures as well) passed on history, traditions, and cultural knowledge. Not only that, it looks like FUN!

This event was originally scheduled to take place during the Funda Fest 26 run from January 19 – February 3, 2024, and features over 25 performers. Performances take place all around Rhode Island, including the opening party in Providence, a Family Fun Day in Newport and Westerly the ever-popular Liars’ Contest in East Providence, and a concluding Black History Live + event at Southside Cultural Center of RI. Most in-person events will also be live streamed. For the full schedule of events, as well as information about tickets and passes, visit fundafest.org.
