The Magic & Making of Short Stories: 4-Week Short Story Writing Course

May 11, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Washington Park Library – Main Area 3

The Magic & Making of Short Stories: 4-Week Short Story Writing Course

We will unpack the mechanics of the short story in this intensive four-week course.

About this event

Whether you’ve always loved short stories, or have just discovered them, the short story stands apart from other writing forms. In this course, we’ll be examining what makes short stories unique, unpacking the mechanics of the short story. From enticing beginnings to show stopping endings, we will analyze and deconstruct short stories to find what makes them so enchanting.

Students will have a chance to generate new work, and revise existing stories, if they so choose. Potential texts to be read include stories by Ursula K. Le Guin, Orson Welles, Edith Wharton, Raymond Carver, Anthony Veasna So, Octavia Butler, and others. The course will culminate in a showcase where students will share their work with their peers. All levels of writers are welcome, and no previous experience with short stories is required.

Meet Your Instructor: Marissa Gallerani is a writer and teacher living in Providence, RI. A lifelong writer and reader, Marissa completed her MFA in fiction at The Newport MFA at Salve Regina. Her work has appeared in The Harvard Review, The Financial Diet, and broadcast on The Public’s Radio. She is currently at work on a science-fantasy novel, and will attend a writing residency at Prospect Street in Vermont later this summer.
