Salary: $14.68 per hour (Increase to $15.40 after 6 month probation period)

Position Description:

Library Safety Ambassadors perform a blend of customer service, light cleaning, and security work under the direction of the Lead Librarian and supervision of the Head of Maintenance and Systems Coordinator or Library Supervisor.  The Ambassadors welcome visitors to the library, provide a general orientation to its services and programs, and oversee and provide a clean, safe and secure environment for staff and patrons by actively monitoring the library building and grounds. They enforce library policies and procedures and assist in resolving critical situations peaceably. 

As part of the library team, Library Safety Ambassadors maintain a welcoming environment for diverse patrons, keep public spaces neat, clean, and organized, and enact the library’s mission, vision, and brand promise.

Essential Job Functions:

Customer Service

  • Greets library visitors and assists with directions and orientation to the library and its services.
  • Responds promptly and attentively to library visitors.
  • Explains library policies and behavior expectations to patrons of all ages.
  • Interacts with and builds relationships with library users to promote constructive, cooperative, and positive interactions with library staff and other patrons. 
  • Assists with setting up and breaking down equipment and furniture for library programs.
  • Demonstrates courtesy and respect to all staff and library users.

Safe & Secure Libraries

  • Actively monitors all areas of the library buildings and grounds to provide a safe and secure environment for staff and patrons.
  • Maintains patron behavior policy as part of a staff team; reports all issues to the Head of Maintenance and Lead Librarian or Supervisor immediately.
  • Acts as liaison between CLPVD and the Providence Police and Fire Departments.
  • Aids sick and injured persons; notifies ambulance when necessary.
  • Refers patrons to the Community Support Specialist as appropriate.
  • Maintains confidentiality and discretion when handling private information. 
  • Completes incident reports.
  • Locks up and secures premises and contents within the building at the end of the business day. 

Cleaning

  • Picks up litter in and outside the library; empties trash bins.
  • Cleans restrooms on Saturdays and other days on an as needed basis. 
  • Wipes down surfaces, including door handles and glass.
  • Vacuums on Saturdays and other days on an as needed basis.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to address emergency situations calmly and confidently.
  • Able to de-escalate problems and conflicts.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other staff.
  • Strong desire to work in a collaborative, team-based working environment.
  • Ability to interact with diverse patrons including different ages, languages and cultures.
  • Enthusiastic about supporting youth in using the library constructively. 
  • Positive attitude towards and willingness to support community members experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and/or mental health challenges in the library.
  • Willingness to learn and put into practice nonviolence and other methods for creating inclusive, healthy, spaces for a diverse population. 
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure. 
  • Ability to speak English and Spanish is a plus. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including email.

Additional Requirements: 

  • Extensive walking, standing & moving about for long periods of time.
  • Ability to manipulate and move library materials up to 40 lbs.
  • Willingness to travel to other CLPVD locations, if required, to provide coverage.
  • Willing to work nights and weekends.

Schedule includes evening and weekend hours; varies by library location:

  • Two positions: Olneyville and South Providence Libraries: part-time, (Monday – Friday; one evening per week, alternating Saturdays)

27 hours/week (no Saturday), 34.50 hours/week (includes Saturday rotation at Rochambeau Library for 7.50 hours) 

  • Two positions: Knight Memorial and Mt. Pleasant Libraries: part time, 30 hours/week (Monday – Saturday; 4 evenings per week)

Experience and Training: High School Diploma. Ability to speak English & Spanish preferred. Trained (or willing to be trained) in CPR, First Aid, and Mental Health First Aid (youth and adult). Experience working with the public in a security/safety role preferred, especially with people experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and/or mental health challenges.
